Mysteries of a miracle

When you think about it... there really aren't too many mysteries left in the world. Most people don't believe in ghosts, trolls and fairies and we all know that the Earth is round and that the sun doesn't circle our planet.

Today while I was with Lindsay at the doctor's office it dawned on my how unusual it is that the birth of our baby holds so many mysteries. Sure doctors have documented just about every second of a pregnancy and know just about everything that happens from conception to birth. And doctors have tools that allow us to peer into our wives' bellies so we can even see our little-one-in-the-making.

Even so, It amazes me that even now we can't be completely certain what the sex of our child is or what day she'll be born. The doctor commented today that if he could predict the exact due day of children he'd be raking in the money. And even though we got a pretty good look at our baby using ultrasound and have been told that the baby is almost certainly a girl, there are still doubts until she is born.

How remarkable is that. Despite all the certainty in the world, we still don't know yet what our baby will be like, what color her hair will be, what color her eyes are; not to mention whether it's a girl. That's pretty amazing, if you ask me... and as far as I'm concerned I'm glad there's some ambiguity. While there will be plenty of pink stuff to return if the doctor was wrong, I'd rather not know all those things until he or she is born. Some mysteries should be left unsolved.
